A loom is a device on which a person can weave fabrics using hands. “Beteulga” is a song about various fabrics that can be woven on the loom. The notes used in the song are so intricately played that they almost sound like they are actually weaving.

We extracted the melody from the song, leaving the lyrics behind, and tried an experiment on it. The original “Beteulga” uses a musical mode in the Northwest of Korean peninsula which is characterized to have bending notes. We thought about introducing the spontaneous, free-spirited blues mode to the Northwest mode and seeing what they would create together. The clear, high-pitched voice of a danso, a haegeum’s animated, personified performance, and a 25 stringed zither’s blues mode intertwine themselves with one another.

As the melody of the Northwest mode meets the mode speaking a foreign language, both their skin vibrantly reacts to each other’s musical language. The notes sneak out from an old, familiar house of the Northwest tunes and scatter into somewhere like fish swimming through the current or small bugs flying and roaming around a flower bed. As they go, they are mumbling whatever they want to say. We cannot tell whether they are heading to water or the sky, whether they are crying or laughing, or whether they have arrived or are still on their way. Their destination seems to be kept as their own secret for a while.
